Report about late Hussein Salah

Brother of detainee reported the police arrested detainee on 9 April 2007 from Addu atoll Hithadhoo Island. Brother of detainee reported boat crew found detainee's dead body in the water in the western harbor of Male' at 7:40 on 15 April 2007.
Brother of detainee reported detainee's body is in the mortuary at Galholu Cemetery. Brother of detainee reported detainee's family refused to let the police bury detainee's body before a post-mortem was done.
Brother of detainee reported the family has retained a lawyer to represent them.
Brother of detainee reported the police keep the body at a temperature of 10 degrees centigrade. Brother of detainee expressed concern as the body may decompose further. Brother of detainee reported they have requested the police to lower the temperature.
Brother of detainee reported they contacted a pathologist, a forensics expert and an ICRC representative from Sri Lanka to come and do a postmortem and expected them to arrive in Maldives some time in the evening of 16 April 2007. Brother of detainee reported the experts could not come to Maldives because the Sri Lankan government would not release them.
Brother of detainee reported the family intends to transport the body to Sri Lanka to get a postmortem done. Brother of detainee reported he wrote letters to the Customs, Department of Port Health and the police requesting them to release the body.

However, the police in a letter said they needed a letter from the legal guardian of Hussein Salah.

Sister of detainee reported the police informed detainee's family of his arrest and told them that he had been arrested for drug offences on 9 April 2007. Sister of detainee reported the police telephoned the family on 10 April 2007 and asked them to pack some personal items as detainee was being transported to Male' for investigation.
Sister of detainee reported the detainee telephoned his family on 10 April 2007 while he was on the boat on the way to Male'. Sister of detainee reported detainee called home again on 12 April 2007 on reaching Male'. Sister of detainee reported that it was the last time they heard from the detainee
Sister of detainee reported the police telephoned the family on 13 April 2007 and informed the family of his release. Sister of detainee reported the police asked detainee's mother whether he had any relatives in Male' so that they could take detainee to them. Sister of detainee reported detainee's mother requested the police to transport detainee back to Hithadhoo Island.
Sister of detainee reported the police telephoned detainee's family on 15 April 2007 at around 10:00 and informed them that the police had found a body in the western harbor and that they thought it was Hussein Salah. Sister of detainee reported the police said that the body was at IGM Hospital and they wanted someone from the family to come and identify whether it was Hussein Salah.
Sister of detainee reported State Television Channel reported that there were no serious injuries visible on detainee's body and that doctors had said detainee had probably died sometime early in the morning on 15 April 2007.
Sister of detainee reported they could not travel to Male' to identify detainee because of the distance. Sister of detainee reported detainee's uncle who lives in Male' went to identify detainee's body.
Uncle of detainee reported the police called him and informed him that there were no visible serious injuries on detainee's body.
Uncle of detainee reported when he saw the body he was unable to identify whether it was Hussein Salah or not because he had not seen detainee in over a year and because of the severe injuries on the body.
Uncle of detainee reported the face was swollen and detainee was bleeding heavily from the eyes and nose. Uncle of detainee reported several teeth from the lower jaw had been knocked out. Uncle of detainee reported there were burn marks, cuts and large bruises all over the body. Uncle of detainee reported the body stank very badly.
Uncle of detainee reported the police identified the body as Hussein Salah after taking fingerprints.
Uncle of detainee reported the body was taken to the cemetery Aasahara at around 12:00 to perform the religious burial ceremony “Kashunamaadhu”.
Brother of detainee reported the family refused to let the police bury detainee before they had seen the body and carried out a postmortem.
Brother of detainee reported the President's office offered tickets to four members of the family to travel to Male' for the burial ceremony. Brother of detainee reported the family refused as the family was larger than just four people.
Uncle of detainee reported people who came to pay their final respect to the detainee at the cemetery gathered at the area to mourn his brutal death. Uncle of detainee reported a large number of people gathered and policemen in star force arrived at the scene. Uncle of detainee reported the police beat up people and arrested many others.
Uncle of detainee reported the police transported the body to the mortuary in Galholu Cemetery around 15:30.
Uncle of detainee reported the family will not let the body be buried before conducting a post mortem. Uncle of detainee reported facilities are not available to do a postmortem in Male' and therefore the family is looking into bringing professionals from abroad to carry out a postmortem.
