Gayyoom's Propaganda
Dear readers,
This email by an unknown Fact_maldives@hotmail.com, appears to be addressing an issue without much success. I just "wonder” what the his/her motives are.
If his attempt is to discredit MDP or the people behind the party, which is now formed, I believe I should address this farce. What amazes me is the fact that he is hiding behind a mask (fact_maldives@hotmail.com), when he could get a medal of honour for this attempt by being open in this debate.

The FACT : Fact_maldives@hotmail.com
Anni, Buruma or GoGo - Who created the MDP?
Anni was having the idea of creating a democratic party most likely with his first breath on earth. He along with his old writer (expired) was unsuccessful to form MDP. Later he associated with Buruma in 2001. The Fact learned that Buruma was the first person signed the document supporting to form MDP, and the rest 42 participants followed him. The Government sent the issue to the parliament. Buruma did not stop but walked all the doors of the members of the parliament, convincing the necessity of a political party in the Maldives. Buruma took advice from Dr. Munavvar (ex-AG) and hoped that he would be positive. But what happened was different. The majority of the members including Dr. Munavvar opposed to the idea! He played the role of James Bond. The Fact also learned that Buruma did not want to write in any document that MDP will operate as a political party. But it was the idea of Anni, who argued Buruma and insisted to write his choice. Today Buruma believes that it was Anni’s fault that he lost. Now its BIG time of MDP. On the 10th November 2003 GoGo claimed that he has inaugurated MDP. His approach is different. His objective is different. He wanted to overthrow Maumoon. He did it unlawfully. But again Anni seems to be backing GoGo. According to a very reliable source Anni, recently contacted Buruma and requested him to join MDP. But he still remembers the hard time he had in 2001. The Fact also learned that Buruma is not happy for Gogo’s initiative. Buruma wanted to secure the name of MDP until 2004, where he will be sitting at the parliament. But before that Sept 20th came and Gogo’s fate decided! So who created the MDP? Judge by yourself!

So, lets have a go and see what I can do to answer this "cleverly" composed article which in my personal opinion, does not have direction nor clarity.

Sappe':
Having political aspirations is not a sin nor does it discredit someone. If MDP was Anni’s idea, let me just say that history will remember him for that, in earnest.>Fact_maldives@hotmail.com :
>Later he associated with Buruma in 2001. The Fact learned that Buruma >was the first person signed the document supporting to form MDP, and the >rest 42 participants followed him.Sappe': So, what is the big deal there? Mr. Qasim is a man of integrity, an honourable person, much respected and loved by the people. The fact the he associated with MDP gives MDP more recognition.
>Fact_maldives@hotmail.com :
>The Government sent the issue to the parliament.
Sappe': This was an illegal act. Which, if there was a constitutional court, could have proved to be abrogation/undermining of the constitution, which is amongst the acts that qualifies for high treason.
My friend, please refer to the following constitutional clauses.
Reading Material :
Freedom of expression
Chapter II – Clause 25. Every citizen shall have the freedom to express his conscience and thoughts orally or in writing or by other means, unless prohibited by law in the interest of protecting the sovereignty of the Maldives, of maintaining public order and of protecting the basic tenets of Islam.
Freedom of association
Chapter II – Clause 27. Persons shall be free to form societies and association, unless prohibited by law in the interest of the protection of sovereignty of the Maldives and the maintenance of public order
Chapter I – Clause 6. The government of the Maldives shall be the authorities exercising the powers of the State in accordance with this constitution.
Chapter I – Clause 12. (1) Any person who, by the threat or use of force or in violation of the Constitutions, abrogates or attempts to abrogate the Constitution or attempts to undermine the Constitution or conspires to commit any of the said acts shall be guilty of high treason.
Protection of the Constitution, upholding the law and honouring the rights of others
Chapter II – Clause 30. It shall be the duty of every Maldivian citizen to protect and uphold the Constitution and the laws of the Maldives and to honour the freedoms and rights of others.
Voidance of laws, regulations and principles inconsistent with fundamental rights
Chapter II – Clause 31
(1) Where any law, regulation or any principle having the force of law is inconsistent with the fundamental rights stipulated in this Chapter, such law, regulation or principle shall, to the extent of such inconsistency, be void.
(2) The fundamental rights stipulated in this Chapter shall not, temporarily or otherwise, be denied save in accordance with this Constitution.

Sappe’: My friend, that was an illegal act. If you understand plain English, you could not disagree.

Sappe’: The purpose of a political party unless already in government, is to lay out objectives to obtain popular support and govern the country, by not overthrowing the government in place, but democratically challenging them and by winning elections held nationally. There is a subtle difference between, political parties and revolutionary organisations.
>Fact_maldives@hotmail.com :
>He did it unlawfully.
Sappe’: What is specifically not stated in the Constitution can be practised by citizens, yet, those in government are bound to what is specifically stated in the constitution. Now, when MDP approached, with all documentation to register the party as per the constitution, the government refused, unlawfully. The constitution does not say what action citizens may take in these circumstances and does not specifically forbid from forming an opposition party in exile, hence my dear friend it is not an unlawful act.
Reading material: [http://www.capitalism.org/tour/preamble8b.htm
“The supreme legal document of a proper society is the constitution -- a citizen's protection against both private criminals and public officials who seek to imitate the criminal's methods.
The purpose of the constitution is not to grant unlimited power to government, or to limit the rights of an individual, but to limit the power of government to its only valid purpose: the protection of individual rights. In other words, a citizen is free to do whatever he is not explicitly forbidden (under a proper legal system the only act forbidden is the violation of the rights); whereas, a state official is only allowed to carry out what is explicitly permitted.”

Sappe’: Intimidation by government, are you proud of that? What does that mean for you? My friend, this government has lost touch with reality and it is time to acknowledge the fact that there are many of us, who will not put up with it nor shut up.
>Fact_maldives@hotmail.com :
>The Fact also learned that Buruma is not happy for GoGo’s initiative. Buruma wanted to secure the name of MDP until 2004, where he will be sitting at the parliament.
Sappe’: That is unless this government throws him in jail for intending to become and MP for the purpose of forming a political party.
>But before that Sept 20th came and GoGo’s fate decided! So who created the MDP? Judge by yourself!
Sappe’: The people of Maldives created the Maldivian Democratic Party, and whether you or Maumoon, likes it or not, MDP will be working hard to achieve its objective to make Maldives a democratic country.
