 DO Announcement
Dhivehi Observer call of it's Maldives Tourism Boycott Campaign

London - 27 - Aug. 2004 - Given the grim situation in our small nation and the plight of the people, we have decided to call of the 'Maldives Boycott Campaign' with immediate effect. DO will do whatever it can to ease the sufferings of the people in Maldives. With the limited resources and severe restrictions of DO reporters and informant, we are working round the clock to bring to readers of DO as much information as possible regarding the crisis in the Maldives.

We call on the international community and friends of Maldives around the world to help our people today.

Michael O'Shea converted to Islam in 1994. His Islamic name is Abdurrahman Abdulla. He has no association with Christian missionary activity, and never has. Readers should remember that these false claims are designed to stop people thinking about Gayyoom's criminal activities. Please let us keep our focus on the relevant issues at hand. - Editor, Dhivehi Observer Forum

21 June 2004

Please be advised that there have been some confusions about some people conducting opinion polls in the Maldives. We would like to make it clear to our readers that neither Sappe' or Dhivehi Observer is currently conducting any polls of this nature. Our most recent poll was the one on the main page of the site, "Should Gayyoom resign immediately?".

If by any chance somebody is conducting a poll, and would like for us to publish the results, please be advised that we will not publish it unless it comes from a registered email address that can be traced back (we will never reveal the email address or the name of the person(s) to the public, without explicit permission from the author). It should also include corroborative evidence that what is presented as the views of the public is to be absolutely true.

Also be aware that certain "poll" results sent into the Open Forum have no way to be proved as authentic and should not be trusted as evidence is almost always never provided.

19 June 2004

DO now has a new email address dhivehiobserver@gmail.com this will ensure that we can receive larger files. The old email is still active but this will be the principle email that we will use from today.

30 May 2004

Dear readers, We respectfully ask you to, please inform us of any suspicious activities that you might have noticed during the voting for the upper house of the Parliament on Friday the 28th of May.

25th May 2004

Every day we live, be it good or bad, important or insignificant, we are creating our history. Gayyoom is determined that this history, because of his atrocious acts, should not be written down. We as people, have a responsibility to say NO to the dictator and stand up and make sure that the world knows everything that happens in our country, the truth. It is our responsibility to publicise, to quote a popular phrase, 'the good, the bad and the ugly' that our society has to offer.

Dhivehi Observer is determined that these crimes that are being committed and made to be part of our history will be recorded and made available for the public to view, for historians to record, tabulate and comment on for future generations. We need to be able to learn from our past mistakes to make our futures better.

So, we appeal to all journalists and writers, to stop self censorship, to be truthful when you record the events of our history. If the (government) organisation you work for is not publishing your material, articles and stories, submit them to DO, anonymously or under your own names, and we will publish it without censorship.

The time to act is now. Almighty Allah commands us to fear no evil and to have faith in his grace and protection. To fear him and him alone.

21st May 2004

Our services our designed to involve the community as much as possible. We want to be a news service for the people, by the people. Our work has achieved us a wide and loyal reader base that can be used by anybody to reach out to the people with the message for true democracy and freedom.

Unlimited information exposing, criticising, advising and providing informed solutions can help stop corruption and mismanagement in the government ranks.

We are asking our readers with access to information to take the high moral ground and to expose it to the people with our help. So that such things do not happen. We cannot wait for a single person to be our saviour from the claws of Gayyoom. We, as the people of the country, should take that responsibility so that our futures maybe a little bit brighter.

Another parliamentary election is upon us again. We as the people have very little idea as to who even the candidates are, let alone their policies. And we are supposed to vote for them. So we ask you, the people, to help us help you. Please send in anything you can about the candidates and their policies and how they conduct themselves as civil servants. We need to know what they stand for before we vote for them to represent us. We have to educate the masses to achieve our goal of true democracy, accountability and the freedoms that we so desire.

17th May 2004

As of today all readers can contribute materials and articles by fax as well. This was done to ensure that the process of contribution is made easier to all parties involved. Our fax no.  + 44  808 208 3494.

We have also added a new section today called Political Cartoons and Satire. This page is dedicated for readers who wish to display their political cartoons and other satirical pieces.

Sandhaanu is currently conducting a survey at the moment that we at Dhivehi Observer support and feel, is very important. This is a gentle reminder to cast your votes and let your voice be heard. It is a completely safe and secure voting environment and you have nothing to worry about your identity being revealed. Please visit their site to vote or vote by e-mail.

20th April 2004

The page that was previously operated as a guest book has been merged into our Open Forum. This was done to ensure that the messages on the site reflected the views of the people who write to us without any confusion about its intended audience.

19th April 2004

At this point in time, Dhivehi Observer feels that we need to clarify certain misconceptions some of our readers might have. Dhivehi Observer is not a mouth piece of MDP or any other political parties of Maldives. Agreed, one of our editors is a Council member of MDP, but our operation is completely independent from any outside forces. Our aim is to provide fair and balanced news and other things of interest to our readers.

18th April 2004

Please excuse us as we conduct some maintenance work on our site. If any of the links don't work or is wrong please write to us and let us know at dhivehiobserver@gmail.com .

17th April 2004

This step has been taken to ensure cooperation from a wide range of people, living in Maldives and abroad.
