Gayyoom to
TELL the public what he thinks about reforming of the
constitution
In the
morning news, it was reported that Gayyoom is going to meet
with a large number of people on Wednesday 9th June, night at
the Islamic Centre to tell what he thinks about the reforming
of the constitution. So there is an open invitation including
the ministers, prominent government officials, academics,
members of associations as well as anyone who is interested in
this issue. The President's Office is now organising the
meeting, it was reported.
DO
wants to TELL Gayyoom to "nicely" and "goodly" step down and
let democratic processes to take its own course. Someone who
was only able to perfect the chapter on his own protection in
17 years of heavy amendments to the constitution cannot be
entrusted to be fair and pure in his deeds. In this instance,
we also would like to TELL him that he is not a GOD either.
"He seriously thinks that he is GOD" told a cabinet Minister.

Mr. Shakeeb, the
Managing Director of MIFCO passes away
We are deeply
saddened by the news of the death of Mr. Ibrahim Shakeeb, the
Managing Director of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company
(MIFCO). Mr. Shakeeb passed away on 5ht June 2004 in Bangkok
whilst undergoing medical treatment. Mr. Shakeeb is one of the
few public figures who maintained a very high level of
integrity and lived a humble life. He was also much loved by
his staff. He was unable to carry out his work as he wished
because of government's constant interference with the
operations of MIFCO.
The Editors of
Dhivehi Observer offer their sincere and deepest
condolences to Mr. Shakeeb's family in this most enduring of
times. May his soul be blessed by Almighty Allah and grant him
the eternal serenity of Paradise, Amen!
QUOTE
"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it,
people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be
maintained only for such time as the State can shield the
people from the political, economic and/or military
consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for
the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the
truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension,
the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."

BREAKING NEWS
Government lobbying hard to elect Abdullah Hameed as the
Chairman of the Special Majlis
Reports coming from Male’ that the Government is lobby hard to
elect Mr. Abdullah Hameed as the Chairman of the Special
Majlis that will oversee the amendments to the constitution.
This explains why Yameen is meeting the Special Majlis Members
in STELCO tonight. There is nothing that can be said about Mr.
Hameed as a Chairperson of any group that will qualify him for
this ominous task.
Why is Gayyoom constantly trying to influence the democratic
process and then label it as free and fair? There are many
lawyers and other prominent figures elected to the Special
Majlis, someone with more integrity and a basic education
should chair the Majlis. Wake up Gayyoom, your brother is does
not have even a shred of respect amongst the population of
Maldives.
Yameen invites newly elected
members of the Special Majlis to a meeting in STELCO tonight
Dhivehi Observer
has received news that Minister Yameen has invited most newly
elected members of the Special Majlis to attend a special
unscheduled meeting tonight at 8.30pm at the STELCO building.
Short of being speculative about the intension for such a
meeting it is believe that the president's brother, will be
delivering a message from Gayyoom about what he needs of the
members to do. DO believes this is going to be a
possible threatening environment for the members, and bribes
are being prepared to be offered. We will bring details as we
get them.
Drug bust in Male'; possible
connection to floating heroin incident
Businessman Bushry
who operates a
famous florist shop in Male'
was busted last night by the police. The drugs were smuggled
in pot plants imported from overseas for sale at his shop
“Cactus” in Sosun Magu. Reports say that many people were
gathered outside his shop last evening. It is alleged there is
a link between Bushry and the notorious NSS Police Senior
official and ex-drug
bureau investigator
Mr. Athif (NSS band
lawakiyaa) to
the heroin bundles that
was washed ashore on the beach of
Villingili
on the
25th of last month.
A
detail account of the matter has been reported by Haveeru
stating that it was a false alarm and Bushry was in Sri Lanka
at the time of the raid.

MDP Member
Wins Male’ Seat
In
yesterday’s elections, Maldivian Democratic Party General
Council Member, Ibrahim Islmail (Ibraa) won Male’ seat for the
Special Majlis (Upper House of Parliament). Mr. Ahmed Athif
(X-Ray Athif) won the second seat. Male’ is the largest
constituency in Maldives and is famous for being the most
competitive seat to secure as well.
DO
congratulates Ibra and Athif for their victory and wishes them
well in carrying out the pledges they expressed in
contributing to a more democratic constitution that better
protects the rights of the people. According to reports from
Male’, the elections went smoothly but the turnout in Male’
was historically low. Results from the Atolls have not been
made public as yet.

Fareed
is set free
After nearly 22 months in
custody for speaking his mind about the extent of corruption
in Gayyoom's government, Mr. Fareed has been released from
house arrest today. He is still not allowed to leave Male'.
Confirmed reports say that it was the judge who decided to
release him and no excuse was given for keeping him in custody
for almost 2 years. Mr. Fareed has been detained arbitrarily
without a trial for all this time. It is widely believed that
the international pressure on the government of Maldives is
producing the desired results.
Yameen blasting out!
A taxi
driver has lost his license and is still in custody for
parking his taxi in front of Yameen's house today. Yameen is
the Minister of Trade & Industry and is seen to be a powerful
figure because he is the brother of Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom.
People who witnessed the incident say that Yameen was barking
like a mad dog at the young taxi driver "this area
belongs to me and there is no authorization to park in front
of my house. I am the Trade Minster here in the Maldives!"
The taxi driver was wise told him to act like a Minister and
not link a maniac.
