Armed thugs roam the streets but police do nothing

17 December 2006

Male' - Armed thugs from various gangs in Male' are reportedly roaming the streets of Male', on motorbikes carrying iron bars and machetes, that look like swords according to local residents. Rival gangs are attacking each other plus they are also vandalising local properties such as shops and homes, eyewitness says.

Despite the concerns of the public over their safety, no action is being taken by the police, confirm the residents. "We called them to report the incidents, several times, but the (police) said that there is nothing they can do," said one resident. In almost all of these cases, top regime officials are involved; hence the police are unable to intervene. In fact, as seen from the pictures below, police vehicles have been present in the locations where these fighting and attacks happen, yet they do nothing.

Two youths were injured in the clashes that occurred on Friday night, both of who are admitted to the hospital.

Earlier tonight, similar clashes occurred in Sosun Magu, near MDP head office. "Police is doing nothing, this is outrageous!" a party official said, after witnessing the incident from the balcony. "There is heavy police presence (as can be seen in the following pictures), but no one is being arrested, unlike what they do to our peaceful protests and gatherings," the official said further.

Pictures were taken tonight Saturday night (16th Dec) at different location in Male' where tension brewed because of these thugs.

Apparently the owner of the car.... who works at the Ministry of Defence. Why on
earth is he laughing about it, one could wonder?

Pictures were taken on Friday night (15th Dec) of the DHL shop which was vandalised by the thugs, who numbered more than 50, according to eyewitness accounts.
