President calls on everyone to cast their vote today
President Ibrahim Ismail expressed his
confidence that MDP will secure all three seats in today's by-election.
However, he wants the win to be with a landslide majority in all three
constituencies. "I urge everyone to go and cast their vote today, in Male',
in Addu and in Shaviyani Atoll" said MDP President who was elected in last
week's historic congress. "It is sometimes human nature to be complacent
about these issues but if we want true democracy we need everyone to
participate in these political activities" affirmed President Ismail.

Voting
begins in three constituencies and Gayyoom's ministers working hard to buy
votes
Voting has begun across Male', Shaviyani
and Addu Atolls to elect their representatives for the
Constitutional Assembly today. The 3 candidates endorsed
by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) are expected to
cruise to victory with a considerable margin. However,
this has not deterred Gayyoom and his cronies from doing
all they can to win the seats including making cash
offers in return for votes. Last night, former
Construction Minister sat in Yoosey's camp in Male'
handing out money. Today Home Minister Thasmeen is in
charge of the distribution. Also, Attorney General
Hassan Saeed is calling Addu people living in Male' and
resorts and making them cash offers for Addu votes. In
Shaviyani there are reported that Moosa Rameez and his
party has been distributing money all over the Atoll to
secure that seat.

State
funds to be utilised to send Athamaa Group to Hajj this year
Male' - A News conference headed by Finance Minister Gasim
has indicated and further confirmed that the head of Athamaa group is in no
position to arrange the Hajj pilgrimage this year. Gayyoom has he will take
care of everything. An addition burden on the already deficit budget of the
country. What is even more interesting is that nothing will happen to Abdul
Latheef since he is allowed to operate above the law for being related to
Gayyoom and for being the father in law of chief torturer Adam Zahir.
Some one deceives hundreds of people yet Gayyoom is prepared
not only to use his forces to protect him but is prepared to bail him out.
Gayyoom
used excessive force - tear gas and pepper spray to disperse the crowd
Male' - Athamaa Hajj group is headed by a cousin of Gayyoom,
the businessman Athamaa Abdula Latheef. Over the past decade or so he has
made millions from organising Hajj pilgrimage as Gayyoom gave him exclusive
licence to do so in his own terms for the most part of it. However, it
appears that the money has gone missing this year and Abdul Latheef has
failed to organise the trip. The group who pay for the trip a year in
advance we disappointed last night when the flight did not arrive to take
them to Mecca as planned. It is now increasing clear that Abdul Latheef
abused the funds and did not charter the alleged Qatar Airways flight.
Hundreds gathered near Abdul Latheef's house last night but
his son in law the chief torturer sent the mighty 'Star Force' to disperse
the crowd. Eye witnesses have confirmed that they beat people, used tear gas
and even used pepper spray to disperse the crowd.

Athamaa
Hajj group gathering near M. Meadows
Male' - Athamaa Hajj group is reported furious over delaying
of their departure and gathered near M. Meadows earlier tonight and are
demanding their money back. Some are still there but the crowd has thinned
down after Gayyoom's militia came to
disperse
them. They reportedly went to the airport tonight but there was no flight
and there was no prior information. Mr. Latheef said in a radio announcement
that he had paid Qatar Airways and he was not aware that it had been
cancelled. However, according to reliable sources there were no reports of
any flight being scheduled to take the pilgrimages.
Additional Star Force has been deployed to the scene and have
even arrested some people according an ye witness.
Athamaa Abdul Latheef is a close associate of Gayyoom and
also father in law of chief torturer Adam Zahir hence he can operate above
the law.
