The year 2005 will be remembered as the year of extensive brutalities against public by dictator Gayyoom

The year 2005 has certainly been one of the toughest yet in Maldives for pro activists of democracy. It will be remembered as the year of extensive police brutalities against public. I take it rather as a time for reflection and clear-sighted realism about how far the nation has progressed on the path towards freedom and democracy, and how much farther we still have to go. more

Election Results Update

Shaviyani snatched by Gayyoom's rigging tactics

Male' - 10:10 PM - Provisional results for Shaviyani has just been announced. As anticipated, Gayyoom's DRP candidate is made to get 2865 votes whilst the MDP candidate Anwar got 1676. Sheikh Ilyas of Adalath got 616 votes.

Breaking News

Shaviyani votes rigged in the Atoll Office

Male' - 9:59 PM - Sources have confirmed that Gayyoom instructed officials in the Atoll of to rig the vote and the whole thing was done inside Shaviyani Atoll Office in Komandoo. Gayyoom is obviously desperate to win at least one of the three seats but he can only use his old tactics to do so. The reason for not counting the votes in respective islands is clear here. The whole logistics of transporting the ballot boxes from an island gives dictators like Gayyoom a great deal of opportunities to rig and temper with the vote.

Breaking News

Gayyoom is cooking Shaviyani votes

Male' - 9:37 PM - Sources in Male' are reporting that Gayyoom has rigged the Shaviyani vote and his candidate is likely to be declared the winner by a majority of around 300. Gayyoom was unable to succeed in rigging the votes for Male' because of the extensive support MDP has in these two locations. However, in Shaviyanni there has been eyewitness reports confirming that some ballot boxes had been tempered. "I saw the Komandoo boxes, the seals were tempered with. Gayyoom wants at least one seat" said an observer at Dharubaaruge where the counting is still going on.

According to locals in Shaviyanni, if there is no rigging of the vote, MDP candidate will will with 60% at least.

Observers are concerned that counting is taking too long, an indication that Gayyoom is up to something as usual.

By-election Results Update

MDP member Suood wins Addu seat with a record majority

Male' - 8:00 PM - The provisional results for Addu has just been announced with MDP leading the way by miles. MDP member Husnu Al-Suood obtain a total of 4679 votes, Gayoom's DRP candidate Dr. Naseer got 1687 and Rasheed of Adhaalath Party got 1521.

This is yet another clear expression of the will of the people of Addu to remove Gayyoom from power. MDP has touched the heart of Addu people and their support for the party is obviously at an all time high. This is the largest ever majority obtained by anyone in Addu. "We are voting with a clear conscience now, for the betterment of our country," said Shahid from Feydhoo.

Gayyoom has failed miserably in his attempts to rig the votes this time because the public in all 3 constituencies have been extra vigilant and prepared to confront his torturous 'Star Force' for the sake of democracy and freedom.

By-election Results Update

Addu results to be announced shortly

Male' - 7:00 PM - The provisional results for Addu is to be announced in just under an hour according to sources in Male'. MDP candidate Husnu Al-Suood is expected to secure the seat with the largest ever majority in history of Addu says the source. "We know that the seat is ours, we just want to know how well we have done as it is an endorsement of the support we have in Addu" said an MDP official.

By-election Results

MDP member Suood to win with a record majority

Male' - Counting of the Addu ballot boxes are currently underway. Results were expected by 2:30 this afternoon but will not be announced till later according our sources. All indications are that Suood will win more than 90% of the votes. Following results just obtained from the counting centre goes to show show much support there is for MDP in Addu,

                                 Suood (MDP)       Naseer (DRP)

Ballot Box from Male'          126                   4

Ballot Box from Male'          90                     3

(Maradhoo Box)

Most resorts give Suood 100% and 5 Addu ballot boxes gives him a 90% majority.

Turn out in Addu is expected be even greater than in the last January's People's Majlis Election.

MDP Congress Closing Ceremony Video Recording

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held its historic first Congress in Dharubaaruge, Male' from 19-21 December. However, the Dictator was obviously not so pleased about all this democratic activities and did not give permission to telecast the Congress live by neither terrestrial nor cable TV. So much for his commitment for democratic reform and liberal society. The live streaming was also not as reliable as one would wish because the network in Maldives is purely satellite based and had bandwidth restrictions. Gayyoom's been having a Field Day everyday for the past 28 years but it's ok, we don't mind that! Anyway, we are glad bring a full recording of the final night of the congress to all our readers. By-Election Results Update
MDP member Mohamed Nasheed (Kaanal) wins Male' seat
Male' - Provisional results for the Special Majlis for Male' seat has been comfortably won by MDP member Moahemd Nasheed (Kaanal) with over 7000 votes with Gayyoom's candidate trailing with an exaggerated total of 4587. However, sources in Male' say that Kaanal in fact got well over 9000 votes and Yoosey got less than 2000 votes. Attempts to rig the votes was hampered due to the overall lead held by Kaanal and the public's preparedness to confront Gayyoom's start Force who were on high alert all day and night wearing gas masks with full riot gear.

MDP Cites Irregularities and Fraud in By-Elections
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has strongly condemned today’s by-election vote in Male’, Shaviyani and Addu atolls, accusing the government of irregularities and fraud to win support for President Gayoom's DRP. more

By-Election Results Update
Gayyoom fails to call off counting for the night, provisional results expected in the next hour
Male' - During the past hour, in a surprise announcement Commissioner of Election said that he will not be able to give the provisional results for Male' tonight without giving any reason. The announcement was met with outrage by the public and they began gathering near Dharubaaruge where counting is taking place. In fear of a mass uprising, the Commissioner had to retract his comments and has now announced that the results will be announced around 2:30 am.
All indications are that the MDP candidate Mr. Nasheed (Kaanal) is set to win with a large majority of more than 70%. Informant say that out of 36 boxes for Male' 8 more than previously known to us, only one box is remaining and counting of that is underway. Furthermore, double checking of 10 ballot boxes are also underway because all those boxes had more than 75% in favour of MDP candidate.

By-election News Update

Gayyoom made his security and police staff to vote in plain clothes

Male' -  Sources in Male' confirmed that several police and Gayyoom's security staff voted today on his order to increase the chances of his candidate Yoosey in the by-election. According to law, police and security staff are not allowed to participate in election or in any political party. However, Gayyoom is able to do this because the government staff are under his control and the election commissioner himself is a fully registered member of Gayyoom's own party DRP in addition to being a hardcore loyalist of Gayyoom.

In all three areas where election was held, Gayyoom ordered his cronies to try their best to rig the votes. However, increased vigilance and preparations by the opposition MDP appears to have made things difficult for them.

MDP is already claiming that they have secured the Male' seat as earlier counts have given them more than 75% of the votes according to party sources.

Gayyoom was out and about in Male' today to check things out and to get people to vote for his candidate. He never had to do that in any earlier elections. Just shows how much power he has lost now.

Counting of the 28 ballot boxes of Male' is on going now.

MDP to declare victory as early countgive the party 75% of the votes

Male' -  Sources within MDP have reported that their candidate Kaanal Nasheed has over 75% votes of the total votes counted so far. Male' has 28 ballot boxes in total and more than 6 have been counted so far. "We are now preparing to declare victory and Gayyoom must concede defeat. "These results indicate that even in worst case scenario MDP will win 70% of the total ballots of Male'."  said a party source.

By-election News

Voting begins in three constituencies and Gayyoom's ministers working hard to buy votes

Voting has begun across Male', Shaviyani and Addu Atolls to elect their representatives for the Constitutional Assembly today. The 3 candidates endorsed by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) are expected to cruise to victory with a considerable margin. However, this has not deterred Gayyoom and his cronies from doing all they can to win the seats including making cash offers in return for votes. Last night, former Construction Minister sat in Yoosey's camp in Male' handing out money. Today Home Minister Thasmeen is in charge of the distribution. Also, Attorney General Hassan Saeed is calling Addu people living in Male' and resorts and making them cash offers for Addu votes. In Shaviyani there are reported that Moosa Rameez and his party has been distributing money all over the Atoll to secure that seat.

News Update

State funds to be utilised to send Athamaa Group to Hajj this year

Male' - A News conference headed by Finance Minister Gasim has indicated and further confirmed that the head of Athamaa group is in no position to arrange the Hajj pilgrimage this year. Gayyoom has he will take care of everything. An addition burden on the already deficit budget of the country. What is even more interesting is that nothing will happen to Abdul Latheef since he is allowed to operate above the law for being related to Gayyoom and for being the father in law of chief torturer Adam Zahir.

Some one deceives hundreds of people yet Gayyoom is prepared not only to use his forces to protect him but is prepared to bail him out.

Gayyoom used excessive force - tear gas and pepper spray to disperse the crowd

Male' - Athamaa Hajj group is headed by a cousin of Gayyoom, the businessman Athamaa Abdula Latheef. Over the past decade or so he has made millions from organising Hajj pilgrimage as Gayyoom gave him exclusive licence to do so in his own terms for the most part of it. However, it appears that the money has gone missing this year and Abdul Latheef has failed to organise the trip. The group who pay for the trip a year in advance we disappointed last night when the flight did not arrive to take them to Mecca as planned. It is now increasing clear that Abdul Latheef abused the funds and did not charter the alleged Qatar Airways flight.

Hundreds gathered near Abdul Latheef's house last night but his son in law the chief torturer sent the mighty 'Star Force' to disperse the crowd. Eye witnesses have confirmed that they beat people, used tear gas and even used pepper spray to disperse the crowd.

Breaking News

Athamaa Hajj group gathering near M. Meadows

Male' - Athamaa Hajj group is reported furious over delaying of their departure and gathered near M. Meadows earlier tonight and are demanding their money back. Some are still there but the crowd has thinned down after Gayyoom's militia came to disperse them. They reportedly went to the airport tonight but there was no flight and there was no prior information. Mr. Latheef said in a radio announcement that he had paid Qatar Airways and he was not aware that it had been cancelled. However, according to reliable sources there were no reports of any flight being scheduled to take the pilgrimages.

Additional Star Force has been deployed to the scene and have even arrested some people according an ye witness.

Athamaa Abdul Latheef is a close associate of Gayyoom and also father in law of chief torturer Adam Zahir hence he can operate above the law.

THE DREAM

By the strength of our common endeavour, to achieve what we cannot do alone, to grant each of us the power to realize our full potential, and the means to create for this and future generations a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few, where the respect we receive reflect the duties we owe, so that freed from the tyranny of poverty, ignorance and fear, we could live together in spirit of solidarity tolerance and respect.
