Gayyoom by English Pen
We understand that family relations of our fellow writer
and honorary member, Mohamed Nasheed, are
currently held and may be subject to ill-treatment. We
believe that the detention of Mr Nasheed’s family
members is in retaliation for his work as a
dissident writer and reformist politician. Mr Nasheed is
internationally renowned and has wide support and we
will be utilising every means possible, at the highest
levels, to bring international attention to the current
misfortune of his family and to any of Mr Nasheed’s
colleagues similarly detained.

Reports from Gayyoom's detention centres; a makeover is
in session
Some
sympathetic prison guards are reporting that some of the
detainees are complaining of severe pains after being
repeatedly being beaten. They also confirm that the only
medication being given to most of the prisoners are very
minimal medication like Panadol. Tuesday Dr. Mohamed
Ahmed visited some of the detainees and prescribed
medication, but they have not been delivered yet, the
medication pending approval. According to these sources,
Jennifer and three other women claim that they were
fondled by some of the cops during their arrest. Some
detainees have been defiant and refused to talk unless
they are provided with lawyers. Senior detainees are
still coming to their senses as they have lost their
bearing after being held in solitary confinement. Dr.
Munavvar is complaining about his hearing as he was
repeatedly slapped during the arrest. Ibra is reportedly
to be very vocal, but most junior guards have very
little to do other than carry out orders.
Our informers claim some detainees are still in
handcuffs and many others kept in a plastic stool
outside the cells for the last few days without sleep.
Two very young boys who has refused to identify
themselves were beaten severely and are complaining of
extreme pain. They have refused to get any medication or
see Dr. Mohamed Ahmed. Three others are on hunger
strike, and our informers tells us that hunger strikes
are very common when political prisoners are taken in
the Maldives but rarely heard of.
DO can also reveal that the prisons are
being painted and cleaned up as they expect a foreign
delegation coming soon for inspection. New mattresses
and bed sheets are being prepared to be provided when a
delegation comes and the toilets are upgraded. Workers
have been busy on the job all day.

MALDIVES UNREST: SECURITY
IMPLICATIONS FOR INDIA

The present confrontation
between the Gayyoom Government and the pro-democracy
elements spearheaded by the Maldivian Democratic Party
(MDP), which has assumed increasing virulence for over a
year now with periodic outbursts of violence, has been
largely focussed on the theme authoritarianism vs
democracy. The MDP and its supporters have been calling
for a genuine multi-party democracy with an executive
accountable to the law and guaranteed fundamental
freedoms. They also feel that Gayyoom, who has
undoubtedly done a lot for the country in the past by
opening up large parts of it to the outside world and
developing it into a tourists' paradise, has outlived
his political utility and has become increasingly
authoritarian and intolerant of criticism and
opposition.

ANTI-GAYYOOM REVOLT IN MALDIVES

The Republic of Maldives
has been in a state of unrest for over a year now due to
repeated agitations by large sections of Male, which
have been accusing the President of ruling dictatorially
and suppressing all political dissidents with the help
of the NSS. In the face of the continuing agitation for
political reforms and under pressure from the UK and the
USA, he agreed on June9,2004, to institute political
reforms.He conceded to his critics, who had no
representation in the Majlis, the right to hold public
meetings to voice their demands.But these commitments
were not honoured and since the beginning of August, the
NSS has again stopped these public meetings and many
advocates of reform have been arrested and allegedly
tortured.

Open Letter to MDP
News has been leaking from the
handful of sympathetic men in uniform that the detainees
are brutally tortured with their hands cuffed and
blindfolded. They also report that the government is
carrying out the "investigation" like "Guantanamo Bay
style" (detainees dressed in orange) in a desperate
effort to label the detainees even as hardcore
terrorists. Words can never describe the fear we the
Maldivians are in today nor can it describe the
unbearable suffering of the 1500 or more detainees in
Gayyoom's custody. Gayyoom is throwing all his means to
hide his inhumanity and cruelty to the international

Masters of
Deception and Terrorists
Mr. Paul Roberts, in his
article ‘Events in the Maldives
make waves around the world’
shed some light the deceptive practices adopted by
Gayyoom and this gang. In his article he tells how the
events of the Black Friday are being reported
around the world. However, in our own home, the Gayyoom
controlled broadcasting media have a different story: a
story that mocks the misfortune of the victims of Black
Friday. People who are unable to add one plus one are
being told to compliment to his brutal actions. The key
people who orchestrate this show such as Khaleel, Masood
and Saleem are promised and reminded of the good fortune
that awaits them by Information Minister Sammarey,
brother-in-law of Gayyoom. The target audience is the
people of outer island, who are desperate for
electricity, safe water, education and so on. They are
forced to believe that any good that can happen to them
can only happen if they unconditionally kiss
Gayyoom and his gang’s feet and acknowledge that the
Presidency of our nation is a birth right of Gayyoom.

called today on the European Union to obtain the
release of four Maldivian cyber-dissidents,
including three persons working for the e-mail
newsletter Sandhaanu, who have been jailed since
police broke up a 13 August pro-democracy

crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Maldives, but
the island country’s government justified the action by
saying the demonstrators were trying to topple president
Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom's regime. “We are concerned by

in Male (the capital) last Friday, the subsequent
declaration of a state of emergency, and large numbers

Condemns Internet Curbs in Maldives
One World South Asia
International media watchdog has condemned efforts by
the Maldives government to combat political dissidence
by cutting off the south Asian nation's Internet links
last week -- the latest in a series of measures to block
freedom of information on the island. The Paris-based
Reporters Without Borders (RSF - or Reporters Sans
Frontieres) has called upon the international community
to press the government of the Maldives to lift
restrictions on the media.

When these forces descended on unarmed
demonstrators protesting in a square outside the national security
services headquarters on Friday, they went on a mad rampage of
unprecedented brutality in full view of the ordinary people. Armed with
teargas and truncheons, their first victims were boys aged 14-18.
Eyewitnesses claim groups of security forces chased after these young
people and kicked, punched, and beat them up mercilessly with
truncheons, screaming abuse the whole time. Four eyewitnesses saw at
least 24 separate incidents like this.

August 13th Black Friday's crackdown in
Maldives may have been a measure out of the regimes desperation to stay
in power, but now President Gayyoom is using the opportunity to
brutalize and torture the country's intelligentsia and the many
businesses that had done well in spite of his nearly three-decades rule.
The targeted witch-hunt now include musicians, poets and artists, who
through their non violent art and occupations have criticized the
several murders and torture carried out by Gayyoom's regime.

The Maldives is now "free" in that they
don't pay tribute and are not protected by Her Majesty's government. But
the few trinkets paid then in tribute are now replaced by millions of
dollars paid to Cable & Wireless who had since cornered the
communications market in Maldives. The state-cum-British-company run
monopoly of the national telecoms company Dhiraagu is a joint venture
between Cable & Wireless and the Maldives government. Internet costs
US$6 per hour and a call to the nearest neighbour costs as much as US$2
a minute. Exorbitant rates, unregulated and rampant by reason of that
company being a monopoly are helping them clean up the Maldives
population on an enormously larger scale than the times of British

EU to impose sanctions against Maldives
Member of the European
Parliament for South East England Nirj Deva who is also
a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the EU
Parliament said that during the 25 year rule of
President Gayoom and his regime had flouted

face of democracy and had brought about terror to
innocent people.
He said he has posed a list of questions to the European
Commission regarding Maldives, which is a popular
destination of the British, Italian and German tourists.
While calling upon the international community to stop

people who suffer under dictatorship.
"Unless the Maldivian government begin a process of vast

Extremists behind unrest, claims Maldives
The anti-government demonstrations
that led to the imposition of an emergency in the
Maldives on Friday were hijacked by Muslim
fundamentalists who do not have any democratic agenda,
chief government spokesman Dr Ahmed Shaheed has said.
But Mohammed Lateef, a Sri Lanka-based member of the
Maldivian Democratic Party, which claims that it cannot
function in the atoll, challenged this assertion, saying
violence was engineered by government forces to derail
reforms, and that India has a moral responsibility to

Police had already decided to stop
the protest before sunset. Since all their requests to
disperse the crowd were unsuccessful, they draw up an
action plan with Yameen. This was to get a young group
of boys to throw stones at the police, after which the
police will charge the protesters and beat them up
before arresting them. It happened according to what they
planned. The group of young boys started throwing stones
at the police. Since the reformers weren’t there for
violence they intervened and tried to stop the boys. As
this was during the time most of the people had gone for
rest or have lunch after the long hours, the number of
protesters were minimal. As the protesters were busy
attending the boys, the police charged them with their
batons, rubber bullets and sprayed tear gas. They
indiscriminately beat up young and old, men and women. read

Maumoon Gayyoom is justifying emergency rule of the
capital by claiming democratic reformists launched
violent attacks against NSS officers and property. There
is no photographic evidence from government or
independent witnesses to back these assertions by the
President's Office. Large public meetings over the last
few weeks have been peaceful without serious incidents
or damage to property.
Minutes after the declaration of emergency rule, when a
Maldives Radio reporter said the NSS were chasing people
in the streets, he was instantly taken off the air.
Internet communication between Maldives and the outside
world has been cut under Gayyoom's orders.

Emergency in Maldives as Protest Ends

Activists
said Gayyoom had yet to make good on promises of
democratization and took to a square in the capital,
Male, on Thursday night to demand the release of five
reformists detained in the past week.
During the
night the crowd swelled to several thousand, and
although the five were released, the crowd refused to
disperse through most of Friday until government forces
moved in to break up the demonstrators.

Mohammed Nasheed, a political exile living in London,
said that he had been approached yesterday by the
military to return to Male.
"This is more
serious than last September's riots," he said. "The
national security service approached me to offer me a

Violent crackdown on
peaceful protestors
The National
Security Service (NSS), assisted by a militia
controlled by Gayyoom's hard-line brother
Minister Yameen, Executive Secretary to the
President, Abdullah Shahid and Police
Commissioner Adam Zahir was on a rampage of
violence against pro-democracy activists.
Activists were beaten up in their homes and were
also subject to verbal abuse and threats by the
NSS. Rubber bullets and tear gas, too, were
used. MDP members Muad Zaki and Ziyad were so
brutally beaten they are under intensive medical
care.
Among those arrested are
leading businessman Hon. Gasim Ibrahim (former President
of SAARC Chamber of Commerce), Hon. Ibrahim Hussein Zaki
(former Minister of Planning and former Secretary
General of SAARC), Hon. Muhammed Munavvar (former
Attorney General) and Hon. Ibrahim Ismail. All four are

Gayyoom uses tear
gas to quel protest - Protestors violently
beaten with truncheons
What started as a
vigil at the Republican Square in Male' at dusk
on Thursday turned into a mass gathering of
people demanding for democratic reform, release
of detained political prisoners, resignation of
cabinet ministers and resignation of President
Gayyoom himself. However, in a nasty twist in
this tale, NSS used tear gas to quel the
protest, the riot police beat the gathered
protestors and arrested a number of reformists.

Majlis member Dr Mohamed Munavvar has been
severely beaten by the NSS and is in custody
along with Special Majlis members Burama Gasim,
Ibrahim Hussein Zaki, Mohamed Shihab and Ibrahim
Ismail (Ibra). Other reformists are being hunted
and arrested while a loud siren is sounding
throughout the capital.

be. Last night marks over a week of public
gathering at the Tetrapod Monument area in the
eastern corner of capital island Male’. It is
truly astonishing to observe the number of
people gathering the area and the diversity of
the backgrounds of people keep on increasing by
the day. If there are marked and outstanding
attributes of these gatherings, it can only be
the extreme peacefulness and sheer determination
of people to obtain what is legally and
rightfully theirs. These gatherings are so
extraordinarily peaceful, the Maldivians now
have grounds to claim that it is they, and not
the Japanese, who are the real architect of
peaceful demonstration.

An alternative view point:
Whose opportunity is this anyway?
Before I comment on the mass gathering of people near the Tetra pod
Monument let me applaud the unique and innovativeness of this idea. I
doubt any of the government advisors may have foreseen such a deliberate
and clever interpretation of the president's July 19th message. For me
this was a very Dhivehi act. After all a significant number of residents
and visitors to Male' visit Lonuziyaaraith Kolhu at least once or twice
every single day. So many ordinary people who may otherwise not attend
such a mass gathering may just happen to travel in that area at that
time! And they may have to stop and wait or perhaps talk to others to
find out why the road is blocked! Or why there are so many people here!
For me, this was the best part of the idea.

His Excellency Abdullah Hameed,
President of the Republic of Maldives
 When
Mohamed Ameen Didi went for his medicals during
the last days of his long rule, he had almost
completely discredited Velaanaagey Ibrahim Didi
who was his deputy in every sense. He repeatedly
alleged that Ibrahim Didi will be fine as long
as he has young boys on his side. He further
elaborated saying that Ibrahim Didi has very
little knowledge of economics and therefore
Hilihilaagey Moosa Did would be more appropriate
as his deputy.
Soon after Ameen Didi left, Ibrahim Did made use
of the opportunity and ousted Ameen Didi.
Ibrahim Didi and Ameen Didi, although they were
not blood brothers, are cousins and grew up in
adjacent house holds.
Gayyoom has discredited Abdullah Hameed to the
same extent or perhaps more than Ameen Didi ever
did to Ibrahim Didi. Unlike Ameen Didi and
Ibrahim Didi, Gayyoom and Hameed have almost no
childhood memories of them running around their
household as they lived all their lives on
different lands. Gayyoom in Egypt and Hameed
living the hard life in Male’.
Unconfirmed reports say that Hameed is
attempting to oust Gayyoom through a no
confidence motion in the Parliament. Hameed,
unlike Ibrahim Didi, it has been said, lacks the
loyalty of the crowds on the street. Hameed like
Ibrahim Didi feels that he can get the tactical
backing of the activists on the street. With
this and Hameed’s loyalists in the Parliament
can oust Gayyoom.

A twist in a tragic tale
“A young man found dead of
a drug overdose in a guest house” screams the
Haveeru headline (19th May 2004) but
there is a slight twist to this tragic tail of a
brother wrongly accused in death. The victim Mr.
Mohamed Shiyaam of (Gaaf Dhaal Gadhoo
Saamiyaanaa) was found dead in a guest house by
a friend at around 11:45 pm. The Deputy
Commissioner of Police Lieutenant Colonel
Ibrahim Latheef said, there was blood and other
discharge from his mouth, and the doctors say
Shiyaam has been using a lot of drugs. What drug
was it? How much of this drug was in his blood?
How much of the said drug causes an overdose?
There are no answers to these questions. The
fact is DC cannot answer these questions. When
asked whether a postmortem was done to determine
the cause of death. His response was that
Maldives don’t have the capability to do a
postmortem. Like most of us Shiyaam was a victim
of one of the regimes biggest failings’ heroin.
But like most Maldivian he was smoking it and
not shooting. A careful check of his body
revealed no needle mark confirming that he was
not using heroin intravenously. Thames valley
Police Drug information website says “injecting
heroin is particularly risky because it reaches
the brain almost immediately, increasing the
possibility of an overdose.”
The purity of the heroin
increases the chances of an overdose. Generally
the quality of the heroin in Male’ is low. A
heroin overdose by smoking it off tinfoil is
highly unlikely. Shiyaam dying of an overdose is
absurd and we don’t buy this story.

Secretary’s Letter to Gayyoom
In an email to
DO, British Foreign & Commonwealth Office today confirmed that a letter
was sent in July, in which the Foreign Secretary welcomed the
President's speech of 9 June, and the proposals it contained for
constitutional reforms. The Foreign Secretary said that many of the
proposals are ones that the UK would wholeheartedly endorse, including
the right to form and run political parties, the separation of the
powers of the head of state from those of an independent judiciary, and
equal opportunity for men and women to stand for election as President.

Gayyoom has ordered the arrest of key reformists
in the Maldives who have been promoting
pluralistic democracy. Unlike before, this time
the government has written to foreign embassies
around the world informing them that the
Government of Maldives has no other choice but
to arrest and restrain the reformists, who they
are labelling as terrorists, and alleging that
they are plotting to overthrow him and inciting
violence. If anyone is inciting violence in the
Maldives it is the National Security Service
which takes orders directly from Gayyoom.

Here we are, The Maldivians, left out on the open sea
surrounded with water but nothing else, thinking that some day, God will
help us to find freedom, freedom from Gayyoom's claws, freedom from the
corruption, injustice and daily torture in all forms.
My fellow Maldivians, no one is going to come and free you from the
atrocities of the present regime. No one can help you but YOURSELF,
OURSELVES.
It is time all of us stop being so ignorant and foolish. Who do you
think we are? Something special? What's so special being a Maldivian?
Are we so intelligent, are we a community with special powers, a unique
democracy (that's a laugh!), a special reward to the human kind! Are we
a community who can stand ourselves, Are we a community who can cry for
help? Are we a community who can survive ourselves? Are we rich? Have we
ever had a government of the people? Have we ever had a president of the
people? Have we ever had a government formed to look after the people of
Maldives? Are we protected? Do we have the basic rights? Are we educated
enough to know our rights? Do we have a chance to do that?
Some say we are more unique. We have a president called Gayyoom, a
dictator, a torturer, a maniac and a criminal now on the loose. He is
against the people of Maldives and continues to terrorize the community
of the peace loving people of Maldives for his own benefit. He is no
longer accepted by the people as he not eligible for the post. We cannot
have an insane character as a president. But today we are FORCED and
HUMILIATED.
We have no other choice but to STOP BEING IGNORANT FOOLS. We need to
accept that it is US, the people of Maldives who can get freedom for our
country, for our people.
We have a long road ahead. Long way for freedom.
To start with we need to totally reject the present government in all
forms, boycott the regime in all forms, discourage them in all forms,
educated our people at islands, make them aware of the atrocities of the
present regime, make them hear the voice of the reformists, pass them
copies of MDP newsletters, Sandhaanu, etc. etc. We need to unite
ourselves more in our fight for Freedom. Help our people to know the
good and bad.
More awareness for all people to fight for freedom, to save our younger
generation and to find a better future rather than be slaves to
dictators like Gayyoom and his regime.
