The naked Male
Belinda Jackson goes beyond the luxurious resorts of this island nation to find out how the locals live. Blood washes across the floor, splattering the tiled walls and columns as it is mixed with water and washed down a drain. As night falls upon this isolated island in the Indian Ocean, a man hunches over a flayed corpse, peeling meaty hunks from the carcass's spine then holding them up for inspection to a thinning crowd. No one ever said the fish market in Male, the capital of the Maldives, was pretty, which is ironic, given that the country banks on its beauty to reel in the world's high-flyers for seriously luxe downtime. more

Tributes paid to the Maldivian surf legend Tony who died yesterday
Male' - Tony Hussain Hinde, the famous surf legend died on Tuesday afternoon in a freak accident whilst surfing at Pasta Point in Male' Atoll. Tony is credited with introducing surfing to the Maldives in 1973. In fact most Maldivians think he is a Maldivian but is an Australian who has bridged that cultural gap. Tony and his surfboard were serendipitously shipwrecked in Maldives almost 35 years ago. He is most famous for running the surf school in Tari Village, now Dhonveli Beach. He once said "Hardly a sunrise goes by that I don't thank Allah for that shipwreck. I paddle into the see-through waves. The coral bottom seems to bend up to meet me. Carving across my first few waves, I have to tear my eyes away from the reef below in order to beat the curl above. Not that I'm complaining." The surf community in the Maldives will greatly miss him so will his many friends and of course his family. On behalf of DO readers, we convey our deepest sympathy to Tony's family and friends. May he rest in peace. comments and messages of condolences

Surfing in Maldives
Maldivians have been surfing using planks for a long time. However, modern surfing came to the Maldives in the late 70s. In 1973 Tony Hinde an Australian surfer took a break from surfing in Sri Lanka and together with a friend set sail for the Africa. He was never to reach his destination. His ship seriously off course was shipwrecked on the shore breaks of Male'. Tony discovered the thrill of surfing on the Maldivian reefs. He changed his name to Tony Hussein Hinde, married a local lady, opened his own surf agency and decided to stay for good. more

Editorial

Do you think we have too many political parties?
Democracy and party politics is something very new to the Maldives. Almost all of our past rulers were autocrats and had no intention of relinquishing their absolute power except perhaps former president Ibrahim Nasir, who resigned in 1978, after governing the country for more than two decades. In his resignation letter, he said that it was not proper for someone to stay in power for too long as it leads to corruption and mismanagement. According to most political thinkers in the country including historians, he practically gifted the reign of power to the incumbent dictator on a plate, in the hope that an educated religious scholar was what the country needed most at the time. Nasir could not have been more wrong and today many Maldivians blame him for not putting in a proper political system in place before passing the reign of power to someone else. Almost three decades have passed and we are still suffering as a result of his mistake. more

Minister for Presidential Affairs gets overtime paid whilst he is studying abroad
Minister for Presidential Affairs, Mr Mohamed Husain, formerly Executive Secretary of Dictator Gayoom and member of parliament, could not pay the price of favours of his boss, it has emerged. A number of government employees (or civil servants as they are popularly known now) may be in receipt of their basic salary while they are on leave for study. In most countries, the government employees are not paid their salaries while they are away for study, but could obtain a no-pay leave for the duration of study. This sounds fairer when the fact that others are not paid a penny when they are studying. more

Male' - According to a source close to PA, Maldives Dictator's brother Abdulla Yameen will complete the registration of his new party Peoples Association within a month and is causing major divisions within the Dictator's fully owned DRP party. The source said that Yamin is being pressured into abandoning the whole idea because quite a lot of senior members of DRP are expected to defect to PA if he goes ahead with the plan. The source also said that Yamin will organise a presidential bid against his brother which some analysts say will play to the advantage of opposition candidates because Yamin will eat into his brothers support base. comment

Mifco staff angry about false promises of pay rise
Several staff of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) are complaining and protesting over the percentage of their pay rise. According to our sources, despite pledges by the company to raise the salary by an average of 40%, the technical staff saw only raises between 20-27% but the top officials got raises up to 50%. Once again all this is linked to the Maldives Dictator, who, by appointing his own niece as Chairman of MIFCO, is virtually controlling the whole place now. Fathin Hameed, who showed the finger to the public coming out of the parliament house late last year, is the reason why MIFCO staff did not get the pay raise they were expecting. read more and comment

China's All-Seeing Eye
Thirty years ago, the city of Shenzhen didn't exist. Back in those days, it was a string of small fishing villages and collectively run rice paddies, a place of rutted dirt roads and traditional temples. That was before the Communist Party chose it - thanks to its location close to Hong Kong's port - to be China's first "special economic zone," one of only four areas where capitalism would be permitted on a trial basis. The theory behind the experiment was that the "real" China would keep its socialist soul intact while profiting from the private-sector jobs and industrial development created in Shenzhen. more

What are the priorities in developing Addu Atoll?

After Male, S. Hithadhoo is the most populous island in the country. There are four administrative islands in the Addu Atoll that could be joined to create two administrative units, whereby making the resulting two islands the sixth and seventh most populous islands in the country. These four administrative units are Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo and Maradhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo. The current population of Hulhudhoo is 3,307 and that of Meedhoo is 2,464. The current population of Maradhoo is 3,318 and that of Maradhoo-Feydhoo is 1,531. The Dream

By the strength of our common endeavour, to achieve what we cannot do alone, to grant each of us the power to realize our full potential, and the means to create for this and future generations a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few, where the respect we receive reflect the duties we owe, so that freed from the tyranny of poverty, ignorance and fear, we could live together in spirit of solidarity tolerance and respect.
