MDP membership is increasing as party chairman returns home

30 April 2005, Male' - Dhivehi Observer

Thousands of people went to the airport and to the jetty near Nasandhura Palace Hotel in Male' this morning to welcome the Chairman of the Maldivian Democratic Party who has been in exile for over 20 months.

Despite the hostile environment of Male' created by the police state of Gayyoom, thousands flocked to welcome Mr. Mohamed Nasheed, popularly known as Anni, who has been a pivotal figure in the movement to establish multi-party democracy in the Maldives.

After a peaceful walkabout in Male' with the supporters and friends as well as his family, Anni went to Gallery Cafe' in Male' where hundred more came to greet him and began joining the party, to show their support and as an act of solidarity.

Political parties are not allowed in Maldives and Gayyoom has over the past 27 ruled a one man state with an iron fist. This is not what we say, it is what the world says and his human rights record is disgraceful.

More than a thousand people have already joined the party as full members.

If you would like to become a member, please download the membership form, fill it and fax or send a scanned copy to  regforms@gmail.com or pass it to any senior MDP member in Male'.
