Making
a giant safe-island by reclaiming the whole of Vaavu Atoll!
Vaavu Atoll is the
smallest administrative atoll in the Maldives. There are about 19 islands in the
atoll but only five of those islands are populated; and the whole atoll has a
population of only 2300. But the government has to bear the overheads of an
Atoll Office and many Island Offices and Schools and Power Houses and other
infrastructure to support the only 2300 people scattered across the Vaavu Atoll.
This is bad economies of scale. This is also against the spirit of
decentralization. more

Three presidential appointees to the Special Majlis (constitutional assembly)
filed a lawsuit against the new, independent Civil Service Commission (CSC) on
May 4, after it told them they could not remain in both the Special Majlis and
their jobs in the civil service. But at Thursday's hearing they failed to secure
a court order allowing them to continue in both jobs until the conclusion of the
case. more

Bangladesh
to import diesel from Maldives
Bangladesh is likely to import high speed diesel from the Maldives as a part of
its strategy to diversify from traditional import sources. Although there are no
oil wells or reserves in Maldives but they have a number of refineries located
in Singapore and Malaysia. A two-member team from the Maldives United Oil
Company is now on a visit to Dhaka to sell diesel oil from their refineries. The
team members had meetings with the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) during
their two-day visit that concluded Tuesday. Sources at the BPC said it is
interested to procure fuel oil from the Maldives mainly because of attractive
price offers.

The
Rise of the Rest
It's true China is booming, Russia is growing more assertive, terrorism is a
threat. But if America is losing the ability to dictate to this new world, it
has not lost the ability to lead. Americans are glum at the moment. No, I mean
really glum. In April, a new poll revealed that 81 percent of the American
people believe that the country is on the "wrong track." In the 25 years that
pollsters have asked this question, last month's response was by far the most
negative. Other polls, asking similar questions, found levels of gloom that were
even more alarming, often at 30- and 40-year highs.

What
really happened to Hassan Farid Didi?
What really happened to Hassan Farid Didi? This is a question that has eluded
Maldivians since early in 1944. A number of conspiracy theories have been put
forward by many people over the years but no one has been able to produce a
definitive answer.
